BRIEF PROFILE OF AUTHOR & BOOK

Uniquely translated in English as the 4+3 Word couplet, a replica of Thirukkural itself by this Author, having a rich profile with recognized Degrees in law, psychology, criminology, administration, language from many colleges and Universities. It is First of its Kind Translation.

English Words are aptly selected, derived from many languages, being medical, legal, physiological, psychological, merchandize terms. Eg.Su-jok, mens rea, agape etc. Author's Preface explains in detail how he has translated Kurals and how the readers could understand this translation well by knowing the indepth meaning of those words.

Advocate by Profession and qualified in many allied subjects like criminology, psychology, administration, language, religion the author sees and shows Thirukkural as a university with different subjects aptly put in 7x1333 words, certifying human beings as Worthy lives.

Wonderfully has this been finally achieved in English for people at large all over, aiming at Peace of the world. Dr.Leonard Fernando, Rector- St.Joseph's Trichy and Dr.Avvai Natarajan, Former V.C. and Tamil Prodigy have commented greatly and graciously on this work through their Foreword and Prelude respectively.

Valluvar has exclusive Kurals for Judges, Advocates, other Professionals, even for people like drunkards as well. That is the graetness of Kurals. A new Tamil phrase and a word were invented by Thiruvalluvar, not known anywhere else except in Greek language.

Valluvar speaks of E-glands before science could find them, about Conciliation, arbitration, Mistake of law etc.which all came into existence recently. Everything that he could tell in 7 words are translated as they are. A sample of this Translation is hereunder:

Dr.K.S.Antonysamy, HoD, Loyola, Chennai

Review on Thirukural Translation-

Dr K.S.Antonysamy,Head, Department of English, Loyola College

Sujatha, the great luminary of 20th Century Tamil Literature stated that there is a yawning gulf between the classics in Tamil and their cognition among the contemporary Tamil youth. In order to make them understand, he made an attempt to paraphrase Aathichoodi and Thirukural into layman’s language. Similarly, Dr Louie, the translator of 4 + 3 word couplet Thirukural has not only abided by the forms of a couplet but also transformed into a lucid, terse and laconic content well suited to both the cognoscenti and mediocre readers with his multifaceted forte and profound erudition. A sample study of his efforts would throw light on his anchorage and supremacy over both the source language and target language:

“Kingdom perishes if eight

Virtues are unheeded” (Chapter 55, Couplet 8 on Upright Governance)

The youth of the generation would easily gat at the content of this kural as if it has been done in communicative translation I appreciate Dr. Loiue for the immense efforts he has put in to make this intellectual sage with a great amount of passion

FOREWORD(புறவுரை)

FOREWORD(புறவுரை)
Tirukkural holds a pride of place in the multifaceted Tamil literature with its 1330 couplets dealing with the ideal virtues to be practised by an individual in his/her day to day life. Not only in the Tamil speaking regions but also in many parts of the world this compendium of human wisdom is known through translations of Tirukkural in different languages. Many scholars from Tamil Nadu and many missionaries who made Tamil Nadu their second home were impressed and inspired by the succinct couplets expressing and extolling human values applicable and needed for people of all walks of life and belonging to different religious traditions. With this conviction they delved deep into the ocean of Tirukkural and through their translations and commentaries made it possible for millions of men and women to inherit the pearls of wisdom to guide their lives.
Starting with G.U. Pope there are many translations and commentaries of  Tirukkural in English. In this long line of erudite scholars, we have now in our hands an unique translation rendered by Advocate Dr. R.J.A. Stephen Loie.
With his expertise in law and human psychology, proficiency in English linguistics and grammar, and ardent love for Tamil language and the unquenchable desire to make the world know and profit from the immeasurable wealth contained in Tamil literature Dr. Stephen Loie has translated the world famous couplet into English. What is unique in his translation is the similar use of four words in line one and three words in line two as followed by Tiruvalluvar. Moreover, his use of descriptive grammar and use of idiomatic expressions make this translation artistic and captivating.
In itself it is a bold attempt and a spectacular achievement because despite the grammar and literary structures of English and Tamil being different, Dr. Loie has overcome all the hurdles and aptly presented Tirukkural into English for the first time in 4+3 words in two verses. This translation is yet another testimony to Dr Loie as a man of indomitable courage, meticulous planning and unwavering commitment to the works he undertakes.
Dr. Loie will be greatly acclaimed in both the Tamil and English speaking world for the way he has presented this book following closely the rich tradition of Tiruvalluvar. He has not only given apt titles for each chapter as Tiruvalluvar has done but also like him presents the first couplet in each chapter as explaining the title of the chapter. For example, in chapter 23 Charity he explains this virtue in the following way:
                CHARITY GIVES TO THOSE
                WHO RETURN NOT
No one has so far attempted to present the translation of Tirukkural in English language in the way Dr. Loie has done. It is a historic achievement.
Dr. Loie has already left his indelible mark in many fields as his life story and list of achievements testify. In this book in an integrated way he has made it possible for women and men to grow in gratefulness to God the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, and express and experience this gratefulness by weaving together a world of harmony, justice and peace –  the vertical and horizontal love which is very much needed in today’s world. Mother Tamil will bless him abundantly. I wish and pray that the God of Wisdom continues to shower his blessings on Dr. Stephen Loie so that he produces many more path breaking works to enlighten, inspire and encourage people to walk in the path of virtue.
